On Sunday, our team attended Monte Calvario Church in Managua. Adgusto, our Nicaraguan interpreter, stood on stage next to the visiting Pastor to translate the sermon into English for us. The Pastor came from the northern part of Nicaragua, where Adgusto grew up. The sermon focused on serving Jesus, using examples from the Pastor's years serving in the Nicaraguan army during the civil war. As the sermon progressed, Adgusto stopped translating. Finally, Adgusto interrupted the service to ask if he could speak. He proceeded to give his testimony – of how his father was killed by the Nicaraguan army when Adgusto was 9. At 13 he joined the Contras (the opposition group that fought against the Nica army) and took great satisfaction in killing his enemy. After a life of violence, drugs and alcohol, he turned his life over to Christ. Now, he found himself standing beside his former enemy – who was now his Brother in Christ. Adgusto acknowledged that only through God’s love could the rifts of civil war be healed. Adgusto, the Pastor, and the congregation were deeply touched. What a blessing and privilege for our team to witness this powerful testimony that was orchestrated by God to bring a special message to His Church.
