One of the most impactful days was our visit to the Nueva Vida dump, where the poorest of the poor scavenge through mounds of trash for plastic bottles and cardboard to sell for recycling. As we pulled up, we found about 30 people, ranging from young children to old women, picking through the garbage. Most did not look up or even make eye contact as we exited the vans. Our team spread out and simply began helping. As time passed, conversations – in broken Spanish or with translators – began to flow. We witnessed God breaking down barriers as we asked questions, listened and shared from our hearts and lives. Soon, people were huddled together with arms around each other in prayer. As the afternoon progressed, grim faces and distrust were replaced by hugs, smiles and laughter! At the end of the day we brought out candies, small toys and water for all. What began as a somber day ended with a Jesus-filled party at the dump!
